Learn How To Sew A Lined Drawstring Bag
Have you ever wanted to sew a drawstring bag that fits in the palm of your hand, fits a few essential products but also has a silky smooth inner lining? Well, this drawstring bag tutorial will give you just that.
I wouldn’t say that sewing a drawstring bag is the quickest or easiest sewing project to try if you’re a beginner but if you follow my steps and instructions below, you can sew quite a few of these bags in a day.
And to give you a good idea of how my drawstring bag turned out, here’s a full-sized image:
It’s cute, right?
You can use any patterned fabric for this tutorial but if you’d like a more bulky or weighted drawstring bag, consider adding a layer of fabric batting or fleece.
Without further ado, let’s jump straight to the pattern.

Instructions
Stitch The Patterned Piece
Grab the patterned fabric piece and turn it to the wrong side. Fold the fabric in half while making sure the bottom cut-outs match.
Next, sew according to the indicated black dotted line shown below.
Stitch 3 cm down from the top but leave a small area unstitched, and continue stitching to the end.
Repeat the previous step for the other side of the bag.
Stitch The Lining
Now grab the lining and stitch both sides. However, on one side, leave a small area open for turning the bag inside out!
Stitch The Cutouts
Take the patterned fabric piece, fold the bottom cutout together as shown below, and pin it. Then stitch a 1 cm seam.
Repeat this process for the other side of the patterned piece and the lining!
Join Patterned Fabric & Lining
Grab the patterned fabric piece and place the lining inside the bag with the seams matching on both ends. Then, pin or peg the seams in place.
Stitch all along that line to join both the patterned fabric and the lining as shown below:
Open The Bag Out
Pull the lining out from the bag and use the opening to pull the patterned piece through.
Stitch The Lining Opening
Fold in the opening of the lining and then do a small stitch to close it off. Take the lining of the drawstring bag and carefully place it inside the bag.
Measure The Top Seam
Carefully set the bag, measure out 1 cm from the top of the bag, and then use a pin to mark the spot where the bag opening is on both sides.
Pin & Stitch
Measure out 3-4 cm and place another pin. Now you’ll be sewing on both marked lines.
Create The Bag Strings
Grab the 40 cm strips and fold the strips in half with the wrong side facing out. Then sew the strip to create a tube.
Grab a safety pin and thread it through the tube to turn it inside out. Repeat this process for the second strip as well.
Thread The Strings
Using the bag opening, thread the first strip with a safety pin and pull it out from the other opening.
Head over to the other opening and thread the second strip to the other end. Then tie a knot to join the strips together.
Now your drawstring bag is complete.
It’s so cool when you pull the strings together and it closes perfectly. I love this feature of drawstring bags.
My plan for this bag was to store a few personal items like a rose hand cream, eye cream, and another skincare product.
This drawstring bag is the perfect size for small items, making it easy to carry anywhere.
I don’t mind the floppy, light nature of this drawstring bag. It works well for me.
As mentioned before, you could use a thicker-weight fabric or a layer of fabric batting/fleece to make it stiffer.
I hope you found this drawstring bag tutorial useful!
