Instructions
We’ll begin by creating a nice stitch pattern for the bowl. Lay the polka dot fabric (exterior piece) onto the fabric batting and pin. Start stitching a straight line from corner to corner.
Turn the fabric to the other corner and stitch another line to create this X line.
Go ahead and stitch another line down the center of the fabric. Repeat this step for the final side.
It should look like this:
Fold the piece into half with the fabric batting facing out. On the right side, mark 4 cm down, then 6 cm on the fold line, and draw a line with a fabric marker or tailor’s chalk.
Head over to the other side and repeat the previous step. Once your lines are drawn, pin the fabric. Head over to the sewing machine and stitch the lines you’ve just marked on both sides.
Once you’ve stitched the lines, your fabric piece should look like this. Now open up the fabric and fold it to the other side.
Mark the 4 cm and 6 cm points and draw a line as you did in the previous steps. Stitch the lines, then leave at least a 0.5 cm seam, and cut the corners off.
The next step follows the same process as above.
Take the other patterned fabric square and fold it in half with the right side facing in. Mark 4cm and then 6 cm and draw the lines on both ends.
Stitch the lines on both sides, open the fabric, and fold to the other side. Mark the guidelines, stitch, and cut the excess fabric.
Now it’s time to unfold the fabric. It should resemble a bowl shape.
Take the yellow fabric and place it inside the first piece with the fabric batting. When doing so, ensure that the seam lines match on each corner.
You’ll also want the right sides of the fabric to be facing in and the batting should be on the outside as indicated below.
Carefully align the fabric to the corners and the points and then use a sewing clip or peg to secure it.
If you don’t have any clips, use pins instead.
Use a pencil or tailor’s chalk to mark the point for the opening. This will be used to turn the fabric inside out.
Start stitching the top of the bowl (you can do a 0.5 cm seam) until you reach the marked point.
It can be slightly challenging to maneuver the fabric at first but take your time and proceed at a comfortable pace and you should be fine.
Then, find the opening where the fabric has not been stitched and use your hand to grab one of the pointed ends with your finger to pull it out.
Carefully pull the inner fabric out and use your finger or a pen to open out all 4 points. Then fold the opening seam in.
Pin the opening seam or use a clip to hold it in place. Head over to the machine again and do a top stitch to finish off the bowl cozy.
There you have it! A simple, quick, and easy way to sew a bowl cozy. I hope this tutorial has helped you recreate this project with ease.
The flaps can be folded down or keep them up for a comfortable hold. You can also fold the bowl over to the other side if you want a different pattern. It’s totally up to you.
FAQ
What is the best fabric for bowl cozies?
100% cotton fabric is your best option as this is durable and can withstand heat.
What kind of batting can be used in the microwave?
100% Natural Cotton Batting alongside cotton thread and fabric. This is essential if you plan to use the bowl cozy in a microwave. Always ensure that the products you use are microwave-safe and never leave the bowl cozy unattended as an extra precaution.
Can you make a bowl cozy with one piece of batting?
Yes, I’ve made 2 bowl cozies already with just one piece of batting and it works fine. However, you can use more than one piece depending on the desired thickness and insulation but this might make it difficult to sew with all those thick layers.
Okay, that’s it from me. I do have a few more great projects you can sew for your kitchen. So do check that out.
