For peace, relaxation, and serenity in your bedroom, we have to make a few necessary sacrifices and yes, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this means chucking out your favorite devices and gadgets – the phone and TV.
For creating a relaxing and comfortable bedroom, all it consists of is limiting or completely avoiding the use of these items in your bedroom alongside a few other surprising items that are major sleep and peace blockers.
In this list, I’ve included all the items that should not be kept in a room if you want to get serious about the way your bedroom looks and feels.

1. Clutter
Clutter can be your chaos and door into hell if you’re not careful. And it’s usually the small items like a few cups or dishes from the other day piling up on a desk, a pile of clothes in the corner of the room, or paperwork and books on the bedside table that often lead to a chaotic and messy bedroom.
Before you know it, your entire space looks cluttered and could be the very reason why you feel so stressed in your bedroom.
To ensure your space feels comfortable and relaxing, you’ll have to do an entire overhaul and cleanup.
Knowing how to get rid of things you don’t need in your room will make things easier.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Take a complete inventory of your space and decide what needs to go or stay.
- Start with a small area in the room and work up from there.
- Ask yourself whether it’s necessary to have a specific item out on display.
- Put all items in their respective places (notebooks/makeup/clothes in drawers, books on shelves, trash in the bin)
- If you’re in doubt, put the item aside for a while and come back to it.
Keep this one rule in mind: any surface (desk/cabinet/bedside table) and floor area should be 90% clear.
My desk was an absolute disaster but once I removed the trash, put the pens in the holder, packed away the notebooks into the first desk shelf, and then wiped the surface with furniture polish and a clean cloth, you won’t believe what a difference it made to the space.

Phones, computers, TVs, tablets, smartwatches, and gaming consoles have to go if you want quality sleep.
Having and using electronics in your room will disrupt your sleeping pattern but it also causes a barrier to detach from work or the online world.
Now is the time to swap over to a good old alarm clock and keep the phone out of the bedroom.
If you can’t avoid having these items in your bedroom, then try limiting their use and have clear cut-off boundaries that should decrease the negative impact of these devices.
3. Gym Equipment
If you want to feel constantly stressed, any exercise equipment kept in the room will help you do that.
Sure, it might feel convenient to pop out of bed and straight onto the treadmill or elliptical trainer but this could also pack a heavy load of guilt and dread when you just don’t feel like showing up on a specific day.
To always maintain a neat, clean, and clutter-free bedroom, keep exercise equipment in another location that makes more sense.
4. Bright White Lights
Having white lights in your kitchen or a home office is perfectly fine and suitable but if you’re going to have white lights illuminating your space, you’re probably going to have a hard time winding down for the day.
Switch to a few warm lights instead that will help you relax for the evening or night.
5. Bright and Overly Vibrant Colors
Colors can make or break a room and if you’re sensitive to loud colors, this could potentially disturb your peace. Colors such as orange, red, or yellow could be too stimulating for a space.
That’s why, I suggest opting for more calming and soothing colors such as neutrals or soft blues and greens that will help you achieve a more pleasant atmosphere to relax and unwind.
6. Loud, Busy Artwork
Having artwork is fine and using a few select pieces to personalize your space will boost the overall appeal of your bedroom however you have to pay extra attention to ensure you choose the right pieces that will enhance and promote a safe, calming space.
This is a subjective matter so you’ll have to keep in mind what works for you.
Having an excessive amount of wall art could also potentially feel draining and overwhelming.
In this case, it would be best to limit the number of shelves, artworks, or decorations to the necessary amount that feels cohesive and well-balanced.
7. Extra Furniture
To avoid a cluttered space, remove any extra or unnecessary furniture pieces that take up too much space. You’ll want your bedroom to feel clean, open, and spacious to absorb that functional and purposeful space.
A bed, bedside table, closet, and shelves are just about what every room needs.
While you’re at it, pay attention to the style, design, and color of the furniture. Choose furniture that will also give off a comfortable and relaxing vibe.
8. Food
Food and drink products should not be kept in the room at all so it’s probably a good time to get rid of those late-night snacks on your bedside table.
Not only is it unhygienic to keep food items near your bed and linen, but it could be a really bad move for your overall health.
It’s best to keep things simple by having just a water bottle nearby instead.

9. Dead Plants
This might be a small item yet it can have a great impact on the overall aesthetics of the space.
Dead, dried-up plants can suck the energy and life out of your space but if you change it to a fresh, new, and vibrant pot plant, this will definitely make the space look and feel better.
