Do All Rooms In A House Need A Window? (Tips And More)
I can’t imagine a room without windows and yet, I recently stumbled on a home that my friend was looking to move into that had a room without a window. This made me think, do all rooms in a house need a window?
Ideally, it is good practice to have a window in all rooms in a house, and in some states, it is required by law. There are numerous benefits to installing a window in all rooms, particularly in regards to lighting, ventilation, safety, and scenery.
However, I would be remiss not to mention that the only downsides to a window in a room would be for purposes of recording audio or blocking outside noise.
In those instances, a window may be counterproductive and even unnecessary, especially if you have a filtration, cooling, or cleaning system installed.
Furthermore, too many windows could prove to be a hindrance in terms of privacy when you are located in a busy area or in close proximity to other properties that can see directly into your home from their own.
Even then, it still may be beneficial to have a window in such rooms because the right type could block out sounds when closed or be tinted to create a dark room.
Be that as it may, let’s examine all the functional reasons why all rooms in a house need a window.

Reasons why all rooms in a house need a window
Safety
For one, having a window provides both external and internal visibility. If a fire were to break out in the room, people would be able to see it from the outside.
More importantly, emergency units and firefighters could access the room via the window if required.
If you were trapped or needed to escape, a window in all rooms would provide an exit or entrance.
Additionally, being able to view your surroundings could enhance your ability to spot criminals who may be attempting to enter your premises.
This simple access to visibility could prevent a break-in or even save your life.
Ventilation
In the event that you get exposed to some chemical, your home gets fumigated or there are simply bad odors, having a window is essential and the quickest way to deal with those problems.
Apart from that, getting fresh oxygen into a room can help keep your environment cleaner.
It’s usually in cold, dark, and low ventilated rooms that a lot of bacteria and fungi start to grow which can be hazardous to your health.
Claustrophobia
Anyone who has an issue with closed spaces is going to hate a room with no windows. It’s dark, gloomy and caved in which is not helpful to such a condition at all.
I find that rooms without a window can make me feel kind of depressed and gloomy.
It’s okay if you’re not spending much time in a room with no windows but if it’s a place you will frequent often, then it’s a good idea to have a window installed.
Natural Lighting
What’s great about natural lighting is that it creates the aura of a warm and relaxing environment.
You can save power during the day by turning off the lights in this room and allowing sunlight or daylight to penetrate the room through a window.
Natural lighting also changes as the day progresses which can alter the feel of the room, especially during the early mornings and late afternoons during golden hour.
How to improve a room without windows
Understandably, installing a window into a room that doesn’t have one is a costly endeavor. You may not have the budget to do so but I’m pretty sure we can find some other solutions to improve the quality of your living space.
Mirrors: Due to their reflective qualities, installing mirrors can actually help to bounce and enhance certain areas of your room with light. It also breaks up the monotony of seeing walls from corner to corner.
Plants: Nothing adds more life to a room than greenery. Ideally, succulents can thrive in this environment provided that you expose them to some artificial lighting. Alternatively, get some fake flowers and plants to add color to the room.
Air purifier: A room without windows will have higher amounts of carbon dioxide as well as odors. As such, I would recommend picking up an air purifier to help clean the air in this room. It’s a quick solution that will work.
Vents: if you can’t afford to have windows installed in the room, you could opt to install a vent. This will improve oxygen circulation to some degree.
Skylight: On the off chance that you don’t want windows but have enough funds to build, I would recommend installing a skylight. It’s a phenomenal way to add natural light to your room and it will drastically improve the appearance of the room during the day and at night. It can also double as a central design element.
White walls: The last thing you want to do is paint the walls of a room without windows dark colors. This will only make the room darker. For this reason, I encourage you to paint the walls white to brighten up the room or use natural and earthy tones.
