How Many Bed Pillows Are Too Many? (Best Suggestions)
Adding the finishing touches to a bedroom is one of my favorite parts of home decor. It allows me to have some fun while adding my quirky touches to the room. Pillows are probably the most overlooked part of the bedroom decor. They may have the primary purpose of providing support when you sleep, but they also serve an aesthetic function. Some people opt for a single pillow, while others pile pillows on their bed. But, how many bed pillows are too many?
Depending on the size of your bed, the headboard in use, and the style you are trying to create, the number of pillows on your bed will vary. Be that as it may, most people max out the number of pillows used on a bed at six, but some argue that you can go up to eight. I am of the opinion that for a double, queen, and king size bed, it’s optimal to use two to four pillows on average.
I’ve tried decorating a bed with eight or more pillows, and it was overwhelmingly busy and detracted from any other detail in the room.
The last thing we want is to overpower the decor in a bedroom with pillows.
They are not considered a feature piece for any bedroom, even if you were to use stylish continental pillows. Also, if you were to invest money in a colorful, stylish, and elegant duvet, it would be covered by too many pillows, which defeats the purpose of displaying a duvet on your bed every day.
Every bed should have two sleeping pillows and one accent or throw pillow on average. This is the bare necessity for every single bed, whether you have a single bed or king-size bed.
The unspoken rule of thumb is that you should be able to lay down comfortably on your bed without having to remove pillows. With the rise of modern and minimalistic interior designs, pillows and bedding accessories are used sparingly or as needed.
Behind minimalism is the idea of extreme functionality and ease of use. Having unnecessary pillows on your bed serves no function other than creating clutter in some bedrooms.
If your goal is to have a clean, organized, and minimalistic bedroom, stick to the lower side for the number of pillows on a bed.

The Number Of Pillows According To Bed Size
Single bed
One pillow will suffice, but if you were to layer two pillows along with a throw, it should look awesome. Just because a bed is small doesn’t mean it has to be devoid of accessories and details.
Twin bed
Two pillows are the bare minimum for a twin bed, and four are the maximum. Any more than four pillows is too many for a twin bed.
Double bed
I’m of the opinion a double bed should have at most five pillows. Two pillows on either side of the bed and a cushion, accent, or throw pillow in the center as a statement piece.
Queen and King bed
Some say you could have up to eight pillows for a queen or king-size bed, but I feel like that can be too much.
At most, I would use six pillows, of which only two are continentals. You do not want to have so many pillows that they bleed into the center of the bed.
How Many Pillows Are Needed For Different Situations
For sleeping
One pillow, two at most. You do not want to sleep on a single pillow that doesn’t have enough cushion. Your neck needs to be at a comfortable angle, regardless of which side you sleep on.
For decor
Two pillows on either side of the bed are the sweet spot for bed decor purposes. In some cases, you could go up to six pillows, but they should be positioned appropriately, and you ought never to use more than one continental pillow on either side.
For reading or watching Television
You’ll need about two to three pillows if you are laying down and one or two pillows if you are sitting upright.
What’s important is that your back has enough support while maintaining a natural curve. Far too many people injure their lower backs by not having enough support when they are sitting in bed.
I find that a single continental pillow or two sleeping pillows stacked against each other are enough to support my back and shoulders while I read at night.
Final Thoughts
You’ll notice that the average person requires two sleeping pillows. So, depending on how many people are sharing a bed, multiply the number of pillows required by that number.
If you’re uncertain whether you’ve used too many bed pillows, stick to the lower number. You’re better off with less than with more.
