What Are The Two Most Important Rooms In A House? (Answered)
I had no intention of writing this article and going against the grain with what I’m about to say but I feel like it’s a more honest, realistic and humble answer that will add more value to you, my reader. With that being said, what are the two most important rooms in a house?
Traditional home enthusiasts and dare I say, interior designers or architects alike will say that the kitchen and master bathroom are the two most important rooms in a house. There’s a great deal of merit behind why these two rooms are considered important and vital rooms but I feel like the most important rooms are those that resonate with you as a person.
If I’m being brutally honest, I don’t actually spend as much time in the kitchen as one would think. Perhaps I’m lucky to be living with other people who love to cook and so the kitchen becomes a playroom for them.
I can see how beneficial it would be to place a great deal of importance on the kitchen for someone who has a keen interest in spending a lot of time in that space.
Although one could argue that a kitchen is an essential room that will always exist in a home and to that I say, you’re right.
Even if you don’t have a passion for cooking or cleaning, the kitchen is a useful space that requires thought and consideration.
It needs to be practical, easy to clean, well-ventilated, well lit and decorated in such a manner that it looks good and works harmoniously with the rest of your home.
But, I still maintain it boils down to personal preference.
Personally speaking, the bathroom and my office space are the two most important rooms in my home.
In the bathroom, it’s a space in which I can reserve all my attention towards taking care of myself. From self-hygiene to self-care in the form of relaxing baths and therapeutic showers, the bathroom is an escape from home and life within your home.
Ironically and oppositely, my home office is a room in which I need to be focused, productive and clear-headed.
It needs to be free of distractions and designed for hard work. It’s a space that encompasses something truly important to me as a person and for that reason, I consider it one of the most important rooms in a house.
I was having this conversation with a relative and they’re quite spiritual. To them, their prayer room is considered the most important room in their house.
They take a great deal of pride in creating a space that is ultra clean, zen, holy and respectful.

What Makes A Room Important?
The amount of time you spend in a room plus the value it provides make a room important. That’s quite a broad explanation but I think it’s a great measuring stick to use when deciding which two rooms are the most important in a house.
Where will you spend most of your time and what would you like to do in the home that is of most importance to you on a practical and personal level?
Someone who barely spends any time at home and lives their life on the road or mostly at work wouldn’t care too much about the pantry or their entertainment room.
On a different note, someone who prizes time spent alone to relax and recover would find the bedroom to be the most important room in a house.
I hope this provides you with a good idea of what the most important rooms in a house are to you.
Once you’ve thought about that and figured it out, it makes sense to spend a lot of time figuring out how to design and decorate these rooms in a manner that accomplishes their intended purposes.
Like I said above, if your bedroom is the most important room to you and at the same time, you’re the kind of person that finds comfort in nature, it would make sense to design your bedroom with that understanding in mind.
I would have appropriate plants, decor, light and accessories to achieve a natural, relaxing and zen-like environment in your bedroom.
What Does A Kitchen Need?
I know that I’m repeating the obvious here but every kitchen needs the right appliances and cupboards for storage.
Design and decor are important as well.
A good kitchen has a good combination of wall tiles, countertops and flooring that complement each other.
Every kitchen needs to be well-lit either with home lighting or natural lighting. Every kitchen needs a workstation for cooking and meal prep. Every kitchen needs a good sink and enough ventilation.
What Does A Bedroom Need?
For a bedroom to check all the right boxes, it needs to be relaxing and unique.
Because colors are known to elicit various emotions in people, the bed must be placed to best fit the room’s layout and have wall colors that complement your personality.
Some decorations, like wall art, plants, flowers, bookshelves and more, add flavor to the design and are a welcome touch, as are cool lighting fixtures.
What Does A Bathroom Need?
Since the consensus is that the master bathroom is considered one of the two most important rooms in a house, I want to focus on that in this section but it’s really more or less the same.
I think what’s important to note is that a master bathroom should have absolutely everything you can afford.
In other words, if you have a shower, bathtub, toilet, vanity mirror, and medicine cabinet, you have everything one could possibly need.
It seems more practical and preferable to install a shower in the master bathroom when there is only room for a shower or bath.
Concluding Remarks
I have to confess that writing this article on what are the two most important rooms in a house really made me think that I need to be more intentional when I invest in my next home.
As much as I love growing up in this home that we’ve been in for decades, I dream of having a home that reflects every bit of my personality in the rooms that matter most to me.
With that being said, I’d love to know from you, what are your two most important rooms in a house?
