Wreaths may be the typical option that is used to decorate a front door but sometimes it’s always a good idea to change things up. The good news is that there are quite a number of wreath alternatives that you can use to make your door look equally beautiful.

The best alternatives to wreaths that you can hang on your front door are signs, numbers, buckets, boots, watering cans, picture frames, and even a wagon wheel among others. There are also other options such as keeping it holiday-themed where you can use pumpkins, faux leaves, pinecones, and even ice skating shoes.

If you’d like to know the different wreath alternatives to decorating a front door that will easily impress anyone who walks by, we’ll also include a few other tips on how to go about making them yourself.

We’ll also go into the reasons why these alternatives are worth making. If this sounds exciting to you, let’s get to it!

Front Door Wreath Alternatives:

1. Chalkboard Signs

This is the best option if you would like to reuse this decoration throughout the year.

Since it can be erased, you can change the words on the sign depending on what season it is or what message you would like to display.

You can also decorate around the sign with burlap ribbons or even pretty flowers attached to the chalkboard sign.

If making your own chalkboard sign to use, you can find these wooden slabs at a local store where they come in different shapes and sizes.

Tip: Make sure to smooth the surface with sandpaper before you apply the chalkboard paint so you can write on an even surface.

To make this particular umbrella door wreath:

  1. Pick any umbrella of your choice – you can either spray paint over it or leave it as is.
  2. You’ll then want to fill the umbrella with the flowers, making sure to trim them to a length where they are showing at the top.
  3. Once done, tie the umbrella together using a string or ribbon and hang it on your doorknob.
  4. If you do not have a door handle to hang the umbrella, you could try using an adhesive hook or knock a nail and paint it in the color of your door (but this option might be a little scary!)

3. Numbers

The number of your house address is a great alternative if you’re not interested in actually creating a full display. You can either pick them up from a local craft store or find them at a dollar store either as a wooden number or as a polystyrene number.

In fact, these numbers don’t need to look so boring. You can easily decorate them by spray painting them or gluing beads to make them stand out.

Alternatively, you could even use faux flowers to create a decorative display showcasing these numbers.

To attach these numbers, you could either tie them up using a pretty ribbon and have them hang or you could mount them as you normally would.

It’s one of the simplest ways to make your front door look good even without a wreath.

4. Letters

If you’re not into the idea of using your house number, you could always use letters to display your family initials or showcase a specific word.

For example, you could spell out the word ‘joy’ and this will fit right in during Christmas time.

Like the numbers, you can easily decorate these letters to really make them pop.

Or you could use a simple wooden sign like the one shown above and write the words with a black marker or paint if you can’t find any of these fancy letters to use.

5. Floral Display

A floral arrangement or a simple bouquet will do the trick almost instantly. It’s just as great as using a wreath and you will be impressed by the final outcome.

There’s no specific choice of flowers that you need to use but anything from roses to tulips will make your front porch look incredibly attractive.

These flower arrangements can either be placed in a pot, bucket, or woven basket as an extra feature.

6. Rustic Watering Cans/Buckets

Watering cans are a super creative alternative to hang on your front door beside a wreath and they look absolutely gorgeous when a bouquet of flowers is added to it.

If you would like to keep that rustic theme, you could either opt for a rustic watering can or even a metal bucket.

Either option works really well and you will be pleased by the outcome. To make this particular watering can display, I highly recommend that you check out Holly’s tutorial.

This one is also another out of the box option but works surprisingly well! You can hang boots filled with flowers or particular trinkets that you like.

This particular wreath alternative is amazing during rainy days and spring.

You don’t only have to hang one boot but using both pairs filled with pretty flowers, they will look incredibly good.

8. Holiday Themed

I think the holiday season is a great time (or excuse) to become really creative when decorating. It allows you to try different things you normally wouldn’t be brave enough if not for this fun and exciting time.

  • For the Fall: You can hang up pumpkins filled with faux leaves.
  • For Halloween: You can use a witch’s pot filled with skeleton heads for a real spooky theme
  • For Christmas: You can hang up ice skating shoes or mittens filled with ornaments or flowers.

There’s even the option of simply hanging pine cones attached to a long ribbon and bells, which is another great option you can hang on your front door besides a wreath.

9. Wagon Wheel

This idea goes in keeping with the rustic theme and one that is perfect for springtime. You can use a wagon wheel as an alternative to a wreath and decorate it with flowers.

This will give off a wreath vibe but not so much similar that it’s not easily recognizable as a wheel.

Using a wagon wheel is definitely one of the most creative things to hang on your front door that’s worth attempting some time during the year however do ensure that it’s securely mounted correctly so that it won’t fall off.

10. Woven Baskets

If you would like to keep things really simple, woven baskets are great to hang up and even better when filled with beautiful flowers.

This display will make your front door look amazing without a wreath and it’s quite quick and easy to assemble which makes it ideal if you don’t want to spend too much time, effort, or money into decorating your front door.

11. Picture Frames

You might have seen this particular idea floating around or not but it basically consists of using a photo frame to attach flowers, pictures, or even signs.

It is possible to use a large frame but I prefer the smaller ones since they’re easier to handle and sort of look more simple and stylish.

However, it definitely depends on what you prefer or thinks looks great.

It’s your home, so choose something that calls to you! Make sure to have fun and don’t be afraid to let your imagination and creativity take control.
