This year has been filled with amazing challenges, some good and some bad, but amidst the chaos, we still managed to dip out fingers into some DIY’s that improved our crafting skills.

On that same note, I like to close my year off with a few home office changes to inspire myself leading into the new year.

In my earlier years, when my DIY skills were nowhere close to being what they are now, I’d give my home office a fresh coat of paint or swap out my calendar.

Since then, I’ve been able to take things up a notch and give everything from my furniture to decor a fresh update.

So, as usual, I’ve dug through the archives and searched the good ol’ cybernet for a few super cool new DIY home office furniture and decor ideas you can use for the new year.

1. Wooden Storage Container For Your Office Desk

I hate how easy it is to turn a fairly neat desk into an absolute nightmare within days if you don’t have some kind of storage containers or devices on hand. I thought about picking up something plastic from the store but they’re usually so clinical and boring.

Rather than that, I found this wooden storage container and was instantly sold on making it. It adds such a minimalistic but Japanese feel to a desk. You can store anything from paper to every day stationery.

2. Floating Shelves For Books And Supplies

via itsoverflowing

Wall space is often the most wasted space in a home office.

If the minimalist and neat freak in you prefers a desk devoid of anything besides a computer, you could opt for installing floating wall shelves.

You can store a ton more stuff using these shelves than any storage container you could place on your desk.

3. Epic Clip-On Desk Organizer

Another nifty and cool alternative to typical desk containers are these clip-on desk organizers. They make use of the empty space on the sides of your desk allowing you to keep everything you need at arms reach.

4. Golden Desk Organizer

via WallPops

I tend to always circle back to this DIY golden desk organizer because I’ve tried making it, love the finished design and admire the creativity used in repurposing stuff we’d ordinarily throw away and turning it into something eye-catching and useful.

If you want to save money, this is your go-to selection.

5. DIY Rolling Cart And Pegboard

I’m not going to lie, this entire set up really gets me going. I love how the pegboard lets you display EVERYTHING without it looking like a giant unorganized mess.

On the contrary, it all looks very well put together and colorful. The rolling cart is a nice addition, especially pairing it up with a bright color to stand out as a feature piece. I like this one a lot.

6. DIY Glass Calendar

An alternative to typical whiteboards and chalkboards is this DIY glass calendar.

Much like a whiteboard, non-permanent markers and pens can easily be erased and you can actually repurpose an old window for this DIY.

Furthermore, I would like to get my hands on some stones at the dollar store, spray paint the black or gold and glue them on the wooden frame. That should make this look phenomenal.

7. DIY Minimalistic Wooden Monitor Stand

Whenever I watch any Japanese or Asian decor videos, I find myself enamored by the use of wooden furniture and accessories.

It invites warmth into a room and infuses nature into a space that would ordinarily look very clinical.

This DIY monitor stand is a nice aesthetic and subtle upgrade to your home office desk you’ll grow to appreciate as the days bleed on. Make it long enough and you can slide both your mouse and keyboard underneath it.

8. Fluffy Pink Office Chair Makeover

For a more drastic upgrade, I would totally suggest converting your boring old and tattered office chair into this glamorous and fluffy pink chair.

If you’re going to reupholster and want to insert some color into a dreary office, this is truly the perfect DIY. Most of all, it’s a real treat sitting in such a fluffy chair. Trust me, you’ll love it.

9. Colorful And Cute Painted Storage Boxes

Not every makeover requires something big or flashy to make an impact. This simple but colorful idea of painting storage boxes bright pastel colors in a uniform shape is a nice visual update worth trying.

And it won’t even cost you any money if you have paint in storage.

10. Marble Top Desk DIY Project

via Kenzie Taylor

Never have I ever walked into a room, looked at a marble top table and not felt like it boasted a sleek elegance worth marveling at.

I understand that it can be quite costly to install actual marble tops tables and counters but you could save quite a ton of money by following this DIY that uses marble top contact paper.

Yes, you read correctly, marble top contact paper. It looks exactly like a marble top finish but at a fraction of the cost. It doesn’t have the same durability but the goal here is to achieve an aesthetic upgrade, which is does perfectly.

Rope coil containers are not a common storage device found in most home offices because they’re so hard to come by. But, they do say, good things don’t come by easy.

I find them to add personality to an office desk and are quite charming to look at. You have the freedom to make them in ANY shape or size you want which I consider an added incentive.

12. DIY Hanging Desk Organizers

I mentioned wall space being wasted in a lot of home offices so I wanted to share one more DIY worth trying.

This would require you to convert normal cups into hanging storage containers that are perfect for holding light stationery like pens and pencils or flowers and plants.

You’re just going to drill holes into them and draw the rope through them. It’s fairly simple.

13. Paper Storage Container And Organizer

If you work with a lot of paper as I do (comes with the craft and DIY territory), you may want to look into making this paper organizer.

Add labels to each shelf and feel free to decorate the outside with different paint patterns, glued on stones and beads or just write your favorite quotes on it. Feel free to let your creative juices flow.

14. DIY Office In A Chest

This is such an unusual DIY that I couldn’t resist sharing it. You wouldn’t believe it but I had a chest in my room for many years and actually used it to store stuff inside it and on top of it.

Mines was nowhere near to being a fully functional office like this one but I found it to be a unique and useful DIY to share with you.

15. Chalk Paint Mason Jar Organizers

via Kayla’s Cricut Creations

Mason jars are by far the most occurring piece of glass wear featured in home DIY’s and crafts.

They’re so versatile and useful. In this case, they make a beautiful set of organizers and flowers pots for your desk. I love that they’ve been decorated with chalk paint.

That’s a pretty touch and I hope you like it as much as I do.
