Styling your couch can be an incredibly simple, easy, and quick task if all you want to do is just drape a throw.

Maybe you want to create a cozier environment or add some extra personality, color, style, and texture to warm up the room, a throw is one of the best accessories for a couch that will give your space a fresh new look.

It’s not so much to do with how you drape the throw but rather what kind of throw you choose to display. The key is to pick the right color, texture, and style of throw that will enhance the space.

You also want to choose a throw that sparks a specific feeling or ambiance, whether that’s a cozy, warm ambiance or a fun, energetic, creative space.

Trust me, styling a couch with a throw is way easier than you think.

So, join me on this short and quick journey to find out the best ways to style a couch with a throw that will help you design your dream space to perfection.

Ways To Style A Couch With A Throw

Picking The Right Throw For Your Space

Choosing the right throw is the best move to make a couch look good. The right throw will elevate, complement, add texture, and create a specific ambiance.

When choosing a throw, here’s what you need to consider: the color as it correlates with the couch and entire space, the size of the throw, and the quality, material, and design.

However, the first thing I will point out is that the size of the throw matters just as much.

A smaller room looks better with a small throw compared to a large oversized throw as the larger one can easily make the couch and space look cluttered or overwhelming.

This doesn’t really apply so much to larger spaces as you’re free to play around but if you want to make a large room feel smaller and cozier, then perhaps an oversized throw will do the trick.

As you can see, in the decor above, a simple black throw is folded and placed on the couch. It doesn’t need to be draped since there are already a few pillows taking up space but the presence of the throw makes the couch look cozy.

With that said, certain throws can be used to add a pop of color, create a cozy ambiance, or tone down the intensity of a couch.

These factors help to design a look that will fit your space and style while adding personality, character, and comfort.

You can experiment with different throws until you find the perfect one and then consider the various ways to arrange and style the couch with a throw.

Incorporating Patterns and Colors

Colors and patterns are a great adventurous way to add rich color, texture, and interest to a space.

You can dress up any boring or muted color couch to bring it out more with a vibrant and striking throw, especially if you want the couch to be the main feature of the space.

There are many throws in beautiful patterns, designs, and colors that can do just this as long as it goes well with the entity of the space.

Incorporating these colors, fabrics, or patterns using a throw or pillows will do wonders for the overall aesthetic and also make a couch appear more appealing.

Which is exactly what any room needs.

For adding a bold statement, going for colorful pillows or throws will definitely upgrade the aesthetic value of the couch.

For example, consider the popular combination of having orange and red pillows/throw on a blue couch. Pretty bold and intriguing, right?

In addition to color and patterns, including a few textures with certain fabrics will add depth to the space.

Bulky, lightweight, soft cotton, cashmere, or thick-knitted throws are just some of the best options when it comes to a couch throw.

These throws usually add a luxurious and comfortable texture, making any couch look elegant and stylish but incredibly comfortable and cozy.

Using any of these elements as a tool to style a couch will easily transform the appeal and look of the space.

Another fun thing you can do with the use of color and patterns is to mix and match.

When styling a couch, you easily create an interesting layered look by draping two throws together. For instance, one is a neutral-toned throw and the second is a colorful throw in the accent color.

This will surely look artistic while also having a sense of balance with the neutral and vibrant color combination.

Fold or Drape The Throw

Now it’s time to get down to actually styling the couch. Doing this can be really easy and straightforward if you follow my tips.

Here’s what you need to do:

Begin by taking the throw you’ve chosen and decide which area of the couch needs it most. Play around with a few positions to find your best spot.

A throw is usually draped over the arm of the couch which gives a neat and clean look while also not crowding the couch. If you want a casual look, drape the throw over the backrest.

You could also drape the throw from the corner of the backrest and then down slightly to one end of the couch.

Any of these layouts will add visual interest and depth to the couch that makes it appear intimate, cozy, and inviting.

It’s best to consider comfort over all else but it should also be functional. With a bit of creativity, I’m sure you’ll be able to find the layout that pleases you and suits your space.

For making the couch a focal point, you can consider exaggerating the throw on the couch so that it catches most of the attention.

This could be done by completely draping one side of the couch with a thick/soft throw or placing it in a casual, haphazard way for a more relaxed and chill style.

This largely depends on personal preference and the type of decor you have but I suggest just having fun with it.

You can fold it as many times as you’d like, drape it diagonally or hang it over the backrest or arm, whichever option makes you feel comfortable.

Accessorizing with Cushions

Since we’re on the subject of decorating a couch, you might also want to consider including a few cushions or throw pillows to help enhance and elevate that cozy or modern aesthetic.

A few pillows can do wonders to enrich the couch with color, texture, comfort, and style. This can also be a great way to add extra support to the couch.

For lounging by the TV, reading a book, or entertaining your guests, throw pillows and blankets can give off a more homely and comfortable feel that will make it feel more pleasurable to spend time in this space.

You can also use the pillows or cushions to create a harmonious or interesting space. Whichever pillows you choose (the color, fabric, design, pattern) can increase the overall visual of the space.

Play around with the different shapes and sizes for a more appealing look.

Conclusion

Styling a couch with a throw has more to do with the type and color throw you choose to display.

They can either add a complementary or stylish element that transforms your space from basic to wow.

You can also drape the throw any way you like. I prefer to style a couch by folding it and allowing it to hang over the backrest or armrest but draping the throw over the backrest and onto the couch can also appear more comfortable and stylish.

There are so many different ways but it’s best you take into account the size of the throw, room, couch, and your decor.

Also when choosing a throw to style your couch with, consider the color scheme and what the couch or room really needs.

If a neutral couch needs something that will bring it out, a bright-colored throw is all you need. If you need to tone down an intense or vibrant couch, perhaps a light and soft throw will work wonders.

Do experiment with different textures and colors to find your best match and create the coziest living space that also reflects your unique and fun personality!
