Nothing excites me more than the idea of having a coffee station in my own home. Waking up to make a freshly brewed cup of coffee that eclipses an average cup is a beautiful thing. This is why I wanted to share some useful and practical ideas on how to set up a coffee station at home.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that it can become costly to invest in the correct coffee grinder, coffee maker, or coffee plunger.

But, with some savvy purchases, we can design a beautiful coffee station for your home.

Let’s get into the details on how to set up a coffee station at home.

What Is A Coffee Station?

First things first, let’s talk about what is considered a coffee station.

A coffee station is a designated area in your home, usually the kitchen, that stores everything you need to make coffee in an organized and practical manner.

But, it can also be a feature piece in your kitchen for aesthetic purposes called a coffee corner.

Everything about this space is designed to feel like a mini coffee shop in your home. It can be extended into a seating area with its own chairs and table or countertop as well, if you have the space and budget for it.

What Should Be Included In A Coffee Station?

what you need for a coffee station

The idea behind a coffee station is to have everything you need to make a delicious cup of coffee at arm’s length.

Here’s a list of what should be included in your coffee station:

  • A storage container for your different types of coffee.
  • A coffee machine.
  • A kettle (if you do not have a coffee machine).
  • A plunger (if needed).
  • Mugs.
  • Sweeteners and/or powdered creamer.
  • Utensils (if needed).

This is everything you need, but it’s also possible to add other accessories for aesthetic reasons.

I’ve seen people install chalkboards, picture frames, and decorative storage containers that display the different types of coffee in an eye-catching manner.

1. Select the type of coffee station you want

There are four different types of coffee stations for you to choose from. Each of them have their own benefits worth considering.

Countertop: This type of coffee station isn’t installed but is simply added onto your existing countertop. Simply choose a spot that is ideal, purchase the relevant accessories and arrange your coffee station as you desire.

Trolley: For those of us who have limited countertop space in our kitchen or dining room, a trolley coffee station provides a mobile solution. Trolley coffee stations are portable and space saving but require you to invest some money into a strong and durable trolley or table with wheels.

Side table: If you would like something that sits in one spot without taking up too much space, a side table coffee station would be ideal. It’s compact, unobtrusive and relatively affordable for any homeowner.

Wall mounted: In the event that you have no floor space or countertop space for a coffee station, you could mount a shelf or ledge that can be used as a mini coffee station. This is a slightly more expensive option that doesn’t come with the option of being portable. But, it’s a way to make use of wasted wall space that can double as a feature piece.

2. Choose an appropriate location

There are a couple of factors to consider before installing and setting up your coffee station to ensure that you have no problems or inconveniences in the future. Here’s what you need to think about.

It must be near an electrical outlet.

In most cases, you will need an electrical outlet close to your coffee station to power the kettle or coffee machine. To avoid running an extension cable or having to transport your appliances to a power outlet, build your coffee station near one.

Adequate space for storing coffee and equipment.

Another thing to consider is storage space. As much as you could store your coffee and mugs in a different location, it defeats the purpose of creating a coffee station. Make sure that the space used for your coffee station can accommodate a coffee machine, kettle, mugs, plunger and coffee containers.

Easy to clean.

Spills and droplets of coffee are unavoidable. To prevent any damage to your table tops or surrounding area, be sure to place your coffee station away from most material based flooring or objects. Also, be in walking distance to any tap or cleaning utensils to easily and quickly clean up and organize your coffee station after each use.

Not accessible to children.

Whether you’re using a kettle or a coffee machine, there’s always that risk of something happening when you have a home with little kids. To safeguard them against any accidents, make sure that your coffee station is not in their reach and that most things are secured in place to avoid them from being toppled over or dropped onto anyone.

3. Choose a design

Design is just as important as functionality when it comes to any designated section in a kitchen.

To create a coffee station that matches and uplifts the room that it will be located in, choose a style that matches the decor and theme of the room.

It could be any of the following:

  • Bohemian.
  • Modern.
  • Minimalistic.
  • Rustic.
  • Farm.
  • Futuristic.
  • Artistic and colorful.
  • Simplistic.

Consider a color code, material type and arrangement order that is in keeping with the styling of your room or the option you’ve selected from the above list of coffee station designs.

4. Arrange, display and store items appropriately

Clean and prepare the area where your coffee station will be installed.

I’m sure that you would not be okay with unnecessary dust, dirt or grime from getting into your coffee.

Then, install the table, shelf or trolley to the designated area. If you’re working with a pre-existing countertop or table, simply remove all items that may obstruct your coffee station.

Place everything you need and start arranging them accordingly. Prioritize functionality and ease of access.

In other words, you should be able to easily access your coffee machine or kettle, containers storing your ingredients, cups and mugs for your coffee and utensils without creating a mess.

In terms of coffee, I would highly recommend investing some money into storage jars or containers that add an aesthetic detail to your coffee station.

I prefer glass jars to actually display the different grains and types of coffee that I like to consume.

Other people prefer clay, metal or wooden coffee containers.

When it comes to mugs, I’m sure that each person in your home has a special cup or mug for themselves.

Either arrange them on the surface of your coffee station in a spot that doesn’t subject them to the possibility of toppling over and shattering.

Alternatively, invest in a mug/cup holder that holds and displays them beautifully.

5. Accessorize your coffee station.

Lastly, add the finishing touches to your coffee station by decorating it with accessories that match the theme or design you have in mind.

I noticed that some people like to incorporate a deli type coffee station so they insert a chalkboard and flower vase to their coffee station.

Other people are more into a rustic and farmhouse style coffee station and so they make use of wooden accessories or utensils, along with photo frames and picture quotes.

You have free reign to add something that makes your coffee station feel unique and complete.

How To Keep A Coffee Station Clean

Coffee stains. That’s for certain. It may smell amazing freshly brewed but stale coffee leaves behind an odor.

So, you want to make sure that you are frequently wiping up the surface upon which your coffee maker, kettle or plunger sits on.

You could also install a mat on the surface that can be removed every week or two weeks to be washed. Given that this will soak up any spills or droplets of liquid, your surfaces will be saved from stains or discoloration.

At least once a month, clean the coffee machine by following the instructions stipulated by the manufacturing company.

Give your kettle a rinse every couple of days and wipe down your coffee mugs before placing them back onto the counter after each use.

Lastly, invest in a brush that uses soft bristles to dust and remove coffee granules from your coffee station.
